Great Activity in Groups with Numbers

Ask each group to discuss and agree on the meaning of a number and ways of describing it or where it's used. This is good to bring the use of English into maths e.g. the spellings of their write up, also good for verbal feedback to the rest of the class. They should also think about things like Prime Numbers, sequences such as the Fibonacci sequence, Odds, Evens, Prime, Real, Integers, Natural, Whole numbers and so on. Don't forget the effect of using the number in calculations and certain patterns that occur when using the number. You may have even more ideas.

The numbers to use are:

**0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9**

**Spelling:** Zero

**Other words:**

Nothing, None, Nought, Empty, Zilch, Nothingness, Null, Naught, Nil

**Uses**

Used as a place holder e.g. 1**0**3 means 1 x 100 + **0 x 10** + 3 x 1

Used in the Binary system and one of the two most used numbers in the world today due to technology. 0 meaning an electronic component/switch is OFF

Was not originally recognised as a number.

Is not used in the roman numerals counting system

Although it can be used in the **Fibonacci **sequence, Fibonacci himself did not use it.

Zero is not a Prime Number

**Maths**

When adding or subtracting zero from a number, the number remains the same.

The result of multiplying by zero is zero

It is impossible to divide by zero

Any number to the power zero is **One**

Single, Only, Unit

Is an Odd Number

The result of multiplying a number by one is the same number

dividing any number by one results in the same number

Any number to the power **One **equals the number itself

Base 2 is the Binary system used in the world of technology.

Is an Even Number

Is a **Prime Number**

Two is the only even prime number

Is a **Fibonacci Number**

**Maths**

The result of multiplying a number by two is the same as doubling the number

dividing any number by two results in half the number

Any number to the power **Two **equals the number multiplied by itself
